DRUM CLASSES
African Djembe

Intermediate Drum Class - May 2011
What is a djembe?
A djembe is an hour glass shaped drum that originates from countries such as Senegal, Guinea and Burkino Faso in West Africa. Due to its contrasting sounds of deep bass, treble 'tone' and cracking slaps, this drum has become widely popular in North America, Europe, Australia and other countries around the world.
What do we learn in the class?
In both the beginning and intermediate classes students learn proper technique as well as a slew of different rhythms from Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. The goal: to make good music!
Where are classes held?
Beginning classes are held through Delta Continuing Education in the fall, winter and spring. Intermediate classes (requires an audition) are held at the Delta Community Music School through out the year.
Who's teaching us?
Kris Bowerman, B.M. He has 24 years of experience teaching music, specifically for the djembe and all the brass instruments.
Do I need to bring my own drum?
Yes, you do. You can buy one or rent one. They generally run from $150 - $250 and rent from $15 - $18. Here's a list of some places you can go to check out djembes:
